Brig. (R) Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood
Dr. Khalid Masood is a renowned upper extremity surgeon of Pakistan. He did his fellowships in hand and upper limb reconstructive and micro-surgery from UK and USA. He also did his fellowship in upper extremity sports surgery and reconstruction of shoulder and Elbow from Belgium. He is heading Hand and Upper Limb Surgery center situated in Lahore, Pakistan. He has vast experience in managing the complex trauma, deformities, tendon and nerve injuries. Brachial plexus and upper limb paralytic issues i.e. cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke and tetraplegia are frequently managed in his center. He is pioneer of advanced shoulder surgery in Pakistan. His practice includes management of sports injuries related to shoulder, elbow and wrist. Most of the cases are managed arthroscopically while some need open surgical reconstructive management. He has great interest in arthroplastic procedures of upper extremity especially of shoulder related to arthritis, trauma and tumor. His scientific work has been published and presented nationally and internationally with lots of appreciation.

Rationale
Heading Hand surgery is a regional and not a tissue specialty. This requires a precise anatomical and functional knowledge of all tissue systems of the forearm and hand, an appreciation of central nervous control, an awareness of the sensitive relationship of the hand to the individual’s personality, and its importance to his economic state. It has become a rapidly emerging specialty worldwide. While shoulder surgery along with arthroscopic management of sports injury has become an independent full-time specialty in modern worlds.
Hand and upper extremity surgery has been a neglected area in our country. While specialized shoulder surgery and management of sports injuries are almost nonexistent in our state.
A developing country like Pakistan has tremendous need for specialist hand and upper limb surgeons.
Due to rapid mechanization of agricultural and industrial sectors and almost nonexistent laws for worker’s protection, serious hand injuries are rampant and usually involve the most productive segment of the population. These injuries, if not treated properly, not only cripple the individual victims but also result in economic and social burden for the nation.
My Vision
My vision is to establish a state-of-the-art center in the civil sector in the lines of army center HULS.
It should be a highly advanced center of international standard with exceptional surgical and nursing care.
I intend to establish three departments i.e. shoulder elbow and sports surgery, Hand and micro surgery, Brachial plexus and nerve surgery under the umbrella of this specialty
It should be an excellent training place for the national and international fellows. Getting recognition by the POA, PSSH, PASS, EBHS and CPSP will be my first priority.
It should have round the clock services to manage replantation, revascularization and compromised limb.
It should be able to serve the poor and middle class and also be attracted for the affording patients who have to go abroad for the management of such injuries.
It should be able to facilitate the patients not only from all over the country but also from abroad.
Expertise
I am practicing exclusively in Hand and Upper Limb (Hand, Elbow, Shoulder) region for the last fifteen years. The procedures that I perform are those that are mostly neglected, and are hardly performed anywhere in the country.
